The bridge over the moat leads through the gatehouse to a pretty courtyard and into the great hall. Other rooms to visit include chapel\, library\, kitchen\, bedroom and 19th century artists’ studio. There are priests’ holes where Catholic priests hid in the 15th century. SUMMARY:Visit to Worcester – The Commandery and Greyfriars House (NT)
DESCRIPTION:Worcester dates back to the Romans; by 680AD the Saxons had established the Diocese of Worcester and laid the foundations of the Cathedral. Sadly\, the Cathedral is closed on 18 June\, so we will visit The Commandery instead. \nThis was founded in around 1085 as an Almshouse and a Hospitality for Pilgrims by the Knights Hospitallers\, and contains some fascinating medieval paintings and\, it is said\, a Ghost! \nIn the afternoon a guided walk through the city centre leads to Greyfriars House (NT)\, a 15th century timbered merchant’s house\, saved from demolition in the 1930s\, restored and handed to the Trust in 1966. \nFor the latest information about this visit\, please see Stop Press. \n

SUMMARY:Visit to Broadway Tower and Snowshill Manor
DESCRIPTION:Broadway Tower\, the brainchild of Capability Brown\, is a folly at the highest point in the Cotswolds with a viewing platform on the roof. After a coffee stop there\, it’s a short coach ride to Snowshill Manor (NT)\, the unconventional home of eccentric Charles Wade\, a treasure trove of quirky and curious objects. There’s also an Arts and Crafts garden laid out in a series of outdoor rooms. \nphoto credit to Phil Kemp

SUMMARY:AGM followed by a Lecture - The ‘Asian Mystery’:  Benjamin Disraeli and the Poet in Politics
DESCRIPTION:At Magdalen College Auditorium\, Longwall St \nRefreshments and raffle from 10.20am;  AGM at 10.45am;  Lecture at 11.10am.  All welcome! Members £5\, non-members £6 \nBenjamin Disraeli was the most unlikely prime minister of the nineteenth century.  A Jew\, a novelist and a failed poet\, he rose to the leadership of the Tory Party while upturning all the social conventions of his day.  Critics called him “the Asian mystery”;  he himself boasted of having “an Oriental mind”; and his great rival\, Gladstone\, thought him a dictator in the making.  \nThis talk by Dr Robert Saunders\, Reader in British History at Queen Mary University of London\, explores the life and career of one of Britain’s most colourful and controversial prime ministers\, assessing the origins of Disraeli’s politics\, his impact on the nineteenth century and his legacy for later generations.

SUMMARY:Zoom lecture - A History of the National Trust
DESCRIPTION:Mendips\, John Lennon’s family home \nOur speaker\, NT Volunteer David Simmonds\, describes his talk:  Great oak trees grow from tiny acorns\, and this is certainly true of the National Trust.  From its humble beginnings in January 1895\, the Trust has grown to have over five million members\, more than 500 historic buildings\, 780 miles of coast and close to 1\,000 square miles of countryside.  This talk considers how the National Trust has developed over the past 128 years\, and suggests ways in which it might change in the future.  \nMembers will be sent an email with a link to view this talk at a time of their own choosing \n \nSpeke Hall (1500)

Numerous family albums reveal their creator’s interests and concerns\, helping today’s visitors to understand our properties.  \nAnita Bools is the National Trust’s Senior National Conservator for Paper and Photography. In this talk she will share some of her favourite photographs and reveal their stories. She will also describe the challenges in caring for such a vast and precious collection. \n \nLucy Jones’ personal photograph album (she was nanny at Erddig)

SUMMARY:Zoom lecture - Nuneham Courtenay: one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world
DESCRIPTION:The whole Nuneham estate\, including the planned village and house and park\, represents an important demonstration of 18th and 19th century aristocratic taste and power.  It also illustrates the threats to survival which faced English country estates in the decades after World War 2\, and the challenges that still lie ahead.  This talk by Malcolm Airs\, former district conservation officer closely involved in the protection of Nuneham Courtenay\, will touch on all these themes in exploring its chequered history.  \nMembers will be sent an email with a link to view this talk at a time of their own choosing

SUMMARY:Lecture - Bringing the climate change challenge to life:  how the National Trust is playing its part to tackle its biggest threat
DESCRIPTION:At Magdalen College Auditorium\, Longwall St at 11am \nTea and coffee will be served in the Auditorium Foyer from 10.30am\, a chance to chat with friends!  All welcome! Members £5\, non-members £6  \nWe are delighted to welcome Patrick Begg\, Outdoors and Natural Resources Director for the National Trust\, to outline how the Trust’s current Strategy recognises that the biggest threat to our core conservation mission is the accelerating impact of climate change.  Trust properties are suffering from the serious consequences of drought\, flooding\, changes in humidity and the severe pressures on species and habitats.  This presentation will bring to life the various ways our places are being affected\, and describe how we are responding.
