SUMMARY:Lecture - Bringing the climate change challenge to life:  how the National Trust is playing its part to tackle its biggest threat
DESCRIPTION:At Magdalen College Auditorium\, Longwall St at 11am \nTea and coffee will be served in the Auditorium Foyer from 10.30am\, a chance to chat with friends!  All welcome! Members £5\, non-members £6  \nWe are delighted to welcome Patrick Begg\, Outdoors and Natural Resources Director for the National Trust\, to outline how the Trust’s current Strategy recognises that the biggest threat to our core conservation mission is the accelerating impact of climate change.  Trust properties are suffering from the serious consequences of drought\, flooding\, changes in humidity and the severe pressures on species and habitats.  This presentation will bring to life the various ways our places are being affected\, and describe how we are responding.

SUMMARY:Visit to Delapré Abbey and Parkland
DESCRIPTION:Delapré Abbey\, on the outskirts of Northampton\, was built in 1145 as a Cluniac nunnery – the Abbey of St Mary de la Pré. Today’s beautiful walled garden is thought to be the nuns’ burial ground. In 1538 Delapré Abbey surrendered to the crown as part of the Dissolution of the Monasteries\, then changed hands sequentially becoming a family residence. \nMore recently\, the Abbey saw World War II service\, remaining a privately owned home until the death of the last direct descendant in 1943. Following decades of neglect and disrepair\, Heritage Lottery Funding facilitated an ambitious £6.3 million restoration plan: today\, Delapré Park offers access across 500 acres of formal gardens\, a lake\, extensive woodland walkways\, and much more. \nBooking for Members to join this Visit may be done via the booking form sent out with our Newsletter.

SUMMARY:Zoom Lecture - Oxford Botanic Garden at 400: reflecting on the past\, celebrating the present and looking forward to the future
DESCRIPTION:Our Lecturer is Simon Hiscock\, Director of Oxford Botanic Garden and Harcourt Arboretum\, Professor of Botany in the Dept of Plant Sciences at Oxford University. He writes: “Oxford Botanic Garden is the oldest botanic garden in Britain and one of the oldest in the world. Founded in 1621 as a physic garden for teaching medical students how to identify plants used in herbal medicines\, it is the birthplace of the botanical sciences at Oxford. Today it is an important centre of botanical research and teaching\, plant conservation and public engagement. Looking to the future\, exciting plans have been developed for state-of-the-art new glasshouses and new facilities for research and teaching\, as the Botanic Garden moves confidently into its next century\, an era when plants will be critical in addressing global challenges.”

SUMMARY:Zoom Lecture - Romantic Decline: Preserving Chastleton House
DESCRIPTION:A rare gem of a Jacobean country house\, Chastleton was built between 1607 and 1612 by the prosperous wool merchant\, Walter Jones. It was owned by the same increasingly impoverished family until 1991.
