SUMMARY:Zoom Lecture - Oxford Botanic Garden at 400: reflecting on the past\, celebrating the present and looking forward to the future
DESCRIPTION:Our Lecturer is Simon Hiscock\, Director of Oxford Botanic Garden and Harcourt Arboretum\, Professor of Botany in the Dept of Plant Sciences at Oxford University. He writes: “Oxford Botanic Garden is the oldest botanic garden in Britain and one of the oldest in the world. Founded in 1621 as a physic garden for teaching medical students how to identify plants used in herbal medicines\, it is the birthplace of the botanical sciences at Oxford. Today it is an important centre of botanical research and teaching\, plant conservation and public engagement. Looking to the future\, exciting plans have been developed for state-of-the-art new glasshouses and new facilities for research and teaching\, as the Botanic Garden moves confidently into its next century\, an era when plants will be critical in addressing global challenges.”

SUMMARY:Visit to Compton Verney Art Gallery and Parkland
DESCRIPTION:With the days getting shorter\, and autumn colours fading\, what better time to visit this magnificent\, recently restored stately home. Owned and developed by the wealthy Verney family from 1435\, they were forced to sell the property and estate in 1923. Having been requisitioned by the army during the Second World War\, the property fell into disrepair. In 1993 the Peter Moores Foundation purchased the property and formed the Compton Verney Charitable Trust to create a centre for the arts. Re-opened in 2004\, following extensive re-building and renovation\, this 18th -century Robert Adam building now houses some fascinating permanent exhibitions\, which you will be able to view with a tour guide. \nThe permanent exhibitions include British Folk Art\, British Portraits\, North European Art\, Max Lambert\, Chinese Arts & Crafts and Naples Arts & Crafts. Temporary exhibits include Portrait Miniatures\, Dutch Flower Art\, and the contemporary Indian Artist Reena Kallat. The grounds of the estate\, designed by Capability Brown\, are undergoing extensive restoration. The more intrepid may like to venture out to explore this attractive landscape.

SUMMARY:Visit to Hampton Court Palace
DESCRIPTION:A great opportunity to discover the magnificence of this former royal residence\, once home to the flamboyant King Henry VIII. You can marvel at the two distinct and contrasting Tudor and Baroque architectural styles and soak up the atmosphere in 60 acres of stunning gardens beside the River Thames. Extended and developed in grand style in the 1520s by Henry VIII\, the present day elegance and romance of the palace owes much to the Christopher Wren designed baroque buildings commissioned by William and Mary at the end of the 17th century. The building is split into sections each telling a story of a different period of history so you can choose which sections to visit. There are individual electronic guides to tell you all about your surroundings. Highlights include the magnificent Great Hall\, the stunning vaulted ceiling of the Chapel Royal and the enormous kitchens\, which are the most extensive surviving 16th -century kitchens in Europe. The formal gardens are continually being developed and include the 18th -century Privy Garden and the world famous maze.

SUMMARY:AGM followed by a lecture: Linescapes – Remapping and Reconnecting Britain’s Fragmented Wildlife
DESCRIPTION:Annual General Meeting at 10.45am. \nLecture at 11am. \nAuthor and ecologist Hugh Warwick has spent much of his life working on hedgehogs\, but he also has a fascination for wider wildlife issues\, in particular the fragmentation of our landscape and how that impacts on the ability of wildlife to thrive.  Hedgerows\, drystone walls\, railways and motorways: the lines we built to fragment the land have become the agents of connection for wildlife\, while the lines we built for our own connections have become the agents of fragmentation for wildlife. \nHugh\, a Visiting Fellow at Oxford Brookes University\, has hopes that reconnection is beginning to be recognised as crucial for nature recovery.
