SUMMARY:Visit to Lacock Abbey\, Wiltshire (NT)
DESCRIPTION:Lacock Abbey was founded in 1232 as an Augustinian nunnery. It was converted in 1539 to a large country house\, retaining the 13th century cloisters. There are wooded gardens with an orchard\, a pond and rose garden. \nMany families have lived here\, the most famous occupant being William Fox Talbot\, whose experiments laid the foundations for photography. Lacock Abbey houses the Fox Talbot Museum. Lacock village is a lovely place to wander around\, with its much-filmed timber framed cottages\, and its tithe barn. Refreshments: The Stables Tea Room (National Trust) serves sandwiches and light lunches and there are pubs in the village. \nBooking for Members to join this Visit may be done via the booking form sent out with our Newsletter.

SUMMARY:AGM followed by a lecture: Linescapes – Remapping and Reconnecting Britain’s Fragmented Wildlife
DESCRIPTION:Annual General Meeting at 10.45am. \nLecture at 11am. \nAuthor and ecologist Hugh Warwick has spent much of his life working on hedgehogs\, but he also has a fascination for wider wildlife issues\, in particular the fragmentation of our landscape and how that impacts on the ability of wildlife to thrive.  Hedgerows\, drystone walls\, railways and motorways: the lines we built to fragment the land have become the agents of connection for wildlife\, while the lines we built for our own connections have become the agents of fragmentation for wildlife. \nHugh\, a Visiting Fellow at Oxford Brookes University\, has hopes that reconnection is beginning to be recognised as crucial for nature recovery.

SUMMARY:Lecture – Nine Centuries of Stories of Oxford Castle
DESCRIPTION:Taking place at Magdalen College Auditorium\, 11am. Non-members welcome! \nLocal historian\, guide and author Mark Davies has researched the varied history of Oxford Castle\, founded in 1071\, which played an immediate role in the struggle for the throne between the Empress Matilda and King Stephen. \nIt is not until the 17th and 18th centuries that the exploits of some of its more devious\, daring\, deluded or defamed prisoners can be told in any detail. From the Civil War onwards\, these tales of hard labour\, transportation\, escape and execution reveal the extremes of human depravity and ingenuity – not forgetting the gaolers! Most striking among the latter is Daniel ‘Damnable’ Harris\, also an engineer\, builder\, artist and architect\, who exemplified a more enlightened late-18th century attitude to the treatment of prisoners\, and whose legacy is with us still.

SUMMARY:Visit to Claydon House\, Buckinghamshire
DESCRIPTION:Claydon House was built for the 2nd Earl Verney in the 18th century to rival his neighbour\, Earl Temple of Stowe. The simple exterior hides a lavish interior decorated with exotic designs and exceptional Rococo carvings. \nA niece who inherited the building\, and a lot of debt\, promptly pulled down two thirds of the house\, including the ballroom and rotunda\, but the surviving wing is still very grand and fascinating. \nOur group will have a private tour of the house when it is closed to other visitors. Members can book via the booking form sent out with our Newsletter.

SUMMARY:Jewish Country Houses\, Collections and National Memory
DESCRIPTION:From Monday 17th until Sunday 23rd May the Zoom lecture will be Jewish Country Houses\, Collections and National Memory\, a joint presentation by Abigail Green\, Professor of Modern European History\, University of Oxford\, and Tom Stammers\, Associate Professor in Modern European History\, University of Durham. Abigail is working with the National Trust on a Knowledge Exchange Fellowship at Oxford helping to reveal shared Jewish histories across NT properties. She writes: “The country houses of the Jewish elite that were once ubiquitous across Europe have largely faded from national memory. What do these houses and the extraordinary art collections that once embellished them tell us about the changing place of Jews and Jewishness in Britain in the 19th and 20th centuries?” \nImage: View of Upton House
