Visit to Worcester – The Commandery and Greyfriars House (NT)
June 18
Worcester dates back to the Romans; by 680AD the Saxons had established the Diocese of Worcester and laid the foundations of the Cathedral. Sadly, the Cathedral is closed on 18 June, so we will visit The Commandery instead.
This was founded in around 1085 as an Almshouse and a Hospitality for Pilgrims by the Knights Hospitallers, and contains some fascinating medieval paintings and, it is said, a Ghost!
In the afternoon a guided walk through the city centre leads to Greyfriars House (NT), a 15th century timbered merchant’s house, saved from demolition in the 1930s, restored and handed to the Trust in 1966.
